Gladys had a beautiful smile and sparkle in her eye. She adored you Dean and rightly so. She brought you up to be responsible, hardworking and loyal. I'm so proud of how you and Mom took such good care of her. I pray that you can feel both her and your Dad's love shinning on you from the other side. I love you!!! Krystal XO

Stories about Gladys DeWitt
As told by her son Dean
1. As a child I came home from school and found Mom crying. She had been canning pumpkins. She had placed several quart jars of pumpkins in a pressure cooker heating up on the kitchen stove. When the pressure cooker came up to the proper pressure she meant to turn it off but inadvertently turned the know the wrong direction and turned the heat to high. She woke up from her afternoon nap when the pressure cooker exploded. The scene was the coolest thing I'd ever seen! The top of the stove was caved in, the lid to the pressure cooker had gone through the ceiling and was in the attic. Pumpkin and glass was everywhere. It looked like an episode of I Love Lucy. Luckily no one was hurt.
2. Mom raised chicken fryers every summer when I was growing up. While Dad was at work she would kill, butcher and freeze about 50 fryers. She also would raise a large garden and freeze the beans, corn and peas. We didn't have a lot of money back then but we always ate good.
3. Mom and her close girl friend "Tommy Stone" had a habit of "Barking like a dog" when ever someone would sneak up behind them and bark. As a young boy I thought it was neat to sneak up behind one of them and bark. That always got the other one started barking back at the first one and I'd just walk away and watch the show. I feel bad now for being so ornery back then.
4. My Mom and Dad were free spirits. They moved from town to town, state to state as the mood came to them. I remember Dad always telling me that no house was ever going to own them. They loved the freedom to go as they pleased. Mom and Dad were always very close to Dad's older brother Sonny. Sonny and June, Mom and Dad got married at the same time and stood up for each other. All us kids grew up together like brothers and sisters. When Sonny and June moved we just moved too. We all went to California together and lived a few years and then returned to Iowa. After several years both brothers got the urge to be farmers. Mom and Dad moved away and bought a farm in Wisconsin. After several years of that everyone moved to Sheldon, MO. and we were all together again although some of us had grown up to be adults. I mention all this because it is a wonderful memory of mine.
5. Mom loved people. Mom and Dad had many life long friends. I remember Mom and Dad would get together with all their friends and go camping or gather together and have card parties. Every weekend was a gathering of people. We played cards and board game all the time. Every room in the house would have people at card tables competing for a small prize. I grew up this way and continue to do this with my wife Connie Jo. We may not have as many tables now but we learned how to have good clean fun.
6. I know Mom lived through some very hard times throughout her life. I don't ever remember hearing her complain. She knew how to survive with a smile. After Dad passed away she lived in a nursing home for about 3 years. It was hard for everyone but still she never complained. When Connie Jo and arrived for a visit Mom would smile and ask if we brought the cards. Her nurses all told me stories of how she would call out "nurse, nurse, nurse" until they came to check on her. Then she would whisper something and they'd bend over to hear better. Mom would always kiss them and smile when they got too close. It was a game for all of them. The nurses told me they are not supposed to have favorites but they all agreed she was their favorite. We are going to miss her!
