Obituary of Virginia Joan Turner

Virginia Joan (VanDorn) Turner of Sheldon, MO passed away on Wednesday March 15, 2023. She was born on September 5, 1936, in Lamar, MO and was one of seven children born to Harry and Hazel (Corben) VanDorn. She graduated from Mindenmines High School in 1954 and went to work as a cashier for Woolworth in Pittsburg, KS and Kansas City, MO. She married James Turner on November 20, 1965, at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Liberal, MO. They moved to Buckner, MO, east of Kansas City, and lived there for 30 years before moving to Liberty, MO for a couple of years and then to Sheldon, MO in 1997.
Virginia was a talented musician who sang and played the piano. She did several funerals with Marion Sprouls. She was also very artistic and began formal art training in 1980. She took 2nd place for one of her paintings at a contest in Missouri Town in the early 80s. She was talented enough that she was able to sell her paintings. She loved her family, had a great sense of humor, and was known for her loving spirit.
Virginia is survived by her husband James; daughters Vicky Turner of Clinton, MO and Deborah Kirkland of Ozark, AL; sister Marie Crank of Hutchinson, KS; brother Carl (Margaret) VanDorn of Mulvane, KS; and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Harry Lee, Richard, William, and Edwin VanDorn.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Gentiva Hospice in care of the funeral home.
The family will receive visitors at Konantz Warden Funeral Home on Monday March 20, 2023 from 10 AM to 11 AM and a graveside funeral service will follow at Nashville Cemetery.
