Dear Dad,
I miss what we never had time to do together as a family with you, daddo. This world still requires people to live with more love in prioritizing economic sustainability and growth than love in relationships with God, Jesus, family and friends, and community. We love specific work and people we work for and with. And we’re aware it’s imbalanced to work 40 hours a week and try to truly understand and give time needed to important needs like our health, our children and loved ones, church communities, and help to those in challenges to perhaps traumatic experiences in life.
I will never have enough words to thank you for the flexibility in my work schedule when I was employed at ASI. I don’t count the hours nor affects from how much time and effort I was able to give into maintaining a healthy environment for my son to learn at home, his sports and team scheduling, his extracurricular academic and skill training classes, volunteering at his schools, the world garden at Randall Elementary, MilpitasCares projects, ministries at multiple churches, and enjoyment in our lifestyle.
Your daily schedule is also an example to me that I will always hold onto in memory of you, along-with keeping a pen and highlighting marker at hand.
Your everyday was:
Wake up through the night after your 7pm or 8pm sleep time, at least 2 times with thoughts of ASI.
At 4am hour, you won’t return to sleep.
At 5:15am, your routine rush of turning off the news with your shoes on, take your keys, smokes, lighter, and open the garage door. You would become a little anxious, or confused and delayed, in winter when you knew to take an extra item - your jacket.
Drive to work, then coffee, smoke and work.
At 10am you or I picked up the mail.
Before the first afternoon pickup time at the post office, you had bills paid and ready on the delivery table along-with the envelopes of statements and any unpaid invoices for customers at the end of the month.
You always followed me out at the end of the month when I delivered the mail to the post office and customers’ offices with deliveries to save money by not using stamps.
Your prioritized work for the day was completed after the mail went out, and you could have chosen to rest or enjoy a hobby or sport. Instead you stayed at ASI for the entire day through closing, for 4 decades of the same schedule with only a few vacations.
You were raised to work hard and long hours, from a time and generation that was raised on a farm. That was more than enough character building to make you a successful entrepreneur, who was willing to work on a project and do whatever responsibilities it takes from pre-sunrise hours until the early evening.
I’m remembering now after I returned to work for you in late 2010s with mixed nuts for treats and snacks. In time you enjoyed mixed nuts too, then peanuts, and then to your temptation for sweets. You developed a habit of having chocolate covered almonds, chocolate caramel nut clusters and more mixed “peanuts” at your desk. Haha!
One of your enjoyments/loves was eating. At exactly 530pm to 6pm, you’d arrive home ready for your wife’s (my mom Esther) home cooked dinners. Afterwards you’d smoke, TV, smoke angsin, annd to bed. And in most recent years instead of retiring your work responsibilities when your wife did, you enjoyed your dinner time daily at your favorite restaurant Omegas. The servers knew to bring your glass of merlot wine. Then you always ordered according to your nutrition-based or favorite menu item that you memorized for each day of the week.
An entrepreneurial man on schedule, is one way I will always remember and miss you dad.
Since you are gone, I will continue to remember and try my best to care for our customers, ASI business, and my mom too.
ASI is a small family business based on low margin earnings in the low profiteering paper industry with higher costs of rent and utilities in California, producing prints on quality material and paper, ink, and added costs for being networked, machine maintenance, and employees who aren’t given paid benefits in four decades though that might change with new ownership.
I still marvel how my step-dad CJ and my mom Esther started ASI print shop, and that my dad’s intelligence in math - set a price structure in 1984 that never raised pricing to customers with escalation even during COVID. It took multiple thoughtful conversations and courage to change actions, from employees Ed (who was an employee at the time and now part owner) and myself, to increase pricing with walk-in customers before you could increase pricing to selected billed customers.
You loved our customers, that was true.
And you valued what our customers think of ASI, that was also true.
I can only imagine how you might have also known that I love our customers too, and that I value what our customers think of ASI, and that there are truths within my concerns of ASI’s future and our family of employees, while understanding companies have to increase costs for maintaining a profit margin when cost of living increases through 4 decades and some businesses are transitioning out of using ASI.
I continue to pray for more customers who want to use ASI as their print shop and for services like scanning, binding, making signs and displays for events, and deliveries. You know, I pray a lot more now in my adult years. And I am adjusting as I learned that prayer also needs actions.
There is a lot more work to do for ASI and our customers, I hope in God’s will for ASI to continue on!
And I love the business ever since you and mom started it when I was 7years old!
I miss you and I love you daddo! May your soul seek God and Jesus, and find love, justice and peace!
In many thoughts and memories of my parents and ASI with love,
Jezzell Marez

PEACE to Wynn Family. CJ was a friend and working associate for many years, as ASI was my only 'go to' printing company, he always had a smile and a good day wish, when he made deliveries....He was a kind man. RIP CJ.

Met CJ almost 30 years ago through his business, ASI Reprographics. What a wonderful man to work with, always very helpful. I'm really saddened with the news of his passing, but also know that he is now in heaven and no longer in pain, truly heaven gained another angel.
Rest in Peace CJ!

I met CJ back in 1990 when I first started working for a local Construction company. Asi was our local print shop. CJ has always been a great guy to talk with & B.S. with when I stopped in to pick up prints or when I called in an order. He was a stand-up person, good person, and always just easy to talk with. He will surely be missed by me and many others…… Rest in peace CJ.

CJ was my uncle, but much more like another brother. He was only 5 years older than me. He was a big part of my family growing up. He and my three older brothers would build forts and tunnels out of hay bales for all the 'little' kids to climb through.
He took me and my sister on motorcycle rides. He was so much fun and teased just like my brothers.
I had the privilege of seeing him this past May in California. He remembered many things about his past and his time spent with the Pound kids. (his nephews and nieces). He was a very special guy and we will miss him.

I truly appreciate that CJ took care of our parents. He was twelve years old when I left home, fourteen years old when I got married, and the last child to be at home. Our parents made a difficult decision to sell the farm and start working as taxi drivers. CJ worked at a gas station and at Lawn Boy Manufacturing building lawnmowers, when he bought a small house in Lamar, MO for $3,500 in the 1960s and gifted the home to our parents.
I took care of our mom, after our dad passed away. I helped my mom sell her house, buy a trailer and set it up in my yard, furnished it, and divided the remaining household items that she didn't want for her, to her children. CJ never requested anything, never mentioned that he bought their small house, and never asked for money from the home sale. It was decades later, during one of my visits to California, when my brother told me that he bought a small home for our parents. He was always willing to help.
Another memory with my brother that I hold onto, is attending Nazarene Church in Lamar. He told me on one of our visits that he enjoyed hearing me sing with David Turner.
I am glad I was able to visit CJ three times during 2022. The last time I was there, we celebrated his 79th birthday and Christmas.
I will always miss him.

Everyone has a father, but only the special ones are called dad. We had a special bond that even far away, we were always close. I have fond memories of being a little girl growing up in a small town of Olathe, KS. We were in an organization called Indian Princesses. It was a unique club that only fathers and daughters could participate in, no moms allowed. We built cars for racing, went camping, and just had a great time with all the activities. That was one of my favorite things dad did with me.
He was devoted to his business and worked 7 days a week, 365 days a year up until almost his 79th birthday because he loved it so. Yet he would always take time off for me when I came to visit him. I had the greatest opportunity to spend the last six months of his life taking care of him. I want to thank Esther for that opportunity. I’m so proud of you dad and I will miss you so much. I love you more….

We will all miss CJ so much! He was such a big part of our family. These pictures are 10 or 12 years old, but we all loved to go to Omega with him. These are a few pics of us at Omega and one with Mark and his sister, Mary.

I’m Gayla Esparza, C.J.’s niece. He was the best and funniest uncle ever. I’ll never forget his laugh and all the jokes he would play on everyone even when I was a young kid. I’ll remember his old black truck, his goofy gray wig, but most I’ll remember his hugs.

Uncle CJ was a kind, loving, and generous man who was full of laughter and could get a smile from anyone. Uncles have a special role. Not being our father, they can be a friend and a supporter in a different way than anyone else in our lives. They are both a relative and a companion, one of the few people able to be both. Whether they are crazy and weird and only seen at holidays, or on a daily basis, the loss of an uncle is a particularly hard one. The loss of CJ however is filled with many years of happy memories we had, and that special connection between CJ and I will always be cherished and never forgotten.
CJ made a huge impact on Marilyn and my own decision to move to California. CJ and Esther opened their home and allowed us to stay with them while we got settled into California life. CJ offered both Marilyn and I a job at ASI. We worked at ASI several years until both Marilyn and I got employment elsewhere. We will always be thankful for the love and support of getting our family established in California.
CJ and I had many conversations, ranging from family, religion, and can you believe it, politics! I am sure we solved many problems, from the backyard BBQs of “hot dogs and adult beverages”, to trips visiting their home in Loretto. Marilyn and I, with Martie and Macy, always enjoyed family time at CJ’s favorite restaurant, Omega’s. We made some awesome memories!
I think of you daily. Rest in peace!

CJ was my husband, companion, and business partner for more than 40 years. We met in 1981 and started ASI in 1984. We completed a lot of work, enjoyed good times, and went through bad times holding hands together through it all, until the day he moved from California to Missouri on June 7, 2023. CJ, I love you and I know you are in a better place now with your mom and dad. Wishing you peace, Esther

Deepest condolences to CJ’s family: his wife, kids and grandchildren. I’ve known CJ for 20 yrs of course from the shop, where he was always working hard. Even though he was a diligent worker he always managed a joke or two! He enjoyed it. Also loved his routine of eating at his favorite diner where everyone knew his name! Holding a glass of vino in hand ~ one last cheers! He will truly be missed! God Bless you CJ . May you rest in eternal peace with our Heavenly Father.
