When he was 13, he moved in with George and Margaret Hanshaw to help with the farm work. They were like second parents to him, and he always considered Jim Hanshaw another brother. He graduated from Liberal High School in 1945. He served his country in the Army for 2 years, and was a Veteran of WWII. He was honorably discharged and came back home to Liberal. He married his sweet heart, Lois “Arlene” Baker on May 23, 1949. They were married for 63 years. She preceded him in death on August 29, 2012. Elmer was a self-employed dairy and grain farmer. Elmer and Arlene had 2 sons. Mike was born on Christmas Day, 1951, and Larry was born on May 8, 1954. Elmer was a member of the American Legion, the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church of Lamar, and served on the Barton County Soil & Water Board for 40 years. He also got to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.---which was one of the highlights of his life---and was Grand Marshall at Liberal’s Fall Festival in 2015! He marched in the Liberal Parade with the American Legion color guard for the final time in 2017 at the age of 89 years old. Elmer lived at his current residence since 1957, and was disking a field when he had his accident on June 4, 2018. He always loved farming!
